Over many years, we filmed and edited an extensive body of work for Backhausdance, documenting performances and contemporary dance repertory across a wide range of productions.
The work ranged from multi-camera filming of live performances to edited performance pieces and promotional trailers. Each project called for an approach sensitive to the choreography—preserving the scale and structure of the work while using camera selection, framing, rhythm, and editing to bring the viewer closer to the performance.
Glyn is a dancer as well as a filmmaker, and that understanding of movement, timing, and choreographic structure shapes how we film performance. Anticipating movement, and knowing when to hold the full stage picture or move in closer, helps the film keep the integrity of the choreography while drawing the viewer in.
The trailers for Beyond the Noise, One Continuous Line, Quantum of Love, and Scene Unseen are a small sample of what we created together over this long-running collaboration, and show the range of movement, staging, and visual styles we captured along the way.
